01: Introduction

Buying a home is one of the most important financial events in life:

  • It is a very large capital purchase that people will literally have to live with for years.
  • Usually it is heavily financed.
  • It is a home as well as an investment.

Around two thirds of people in the UK own their own home, but research has shown that moving home is one of the most stressful events in life – especially if things do not go to plan. This is not altogether surprising, as many of us only learn such things through hard experience. Learning from others’ experiences can help to avoid or minimise such problems and stress.
